What is Zoom! tooth whitening?

Zoom! is a brand name bleaching process that lightens discoloration of tooth enamel and dentin. Zoom! Tooth whitening is performed in Dr. Begleys surgery and takes about an hour to complete. Dr. Begley will start by prepping your teeth, followed by up to 45 minutes of bleaching, while you wait in the surgery.

How does Zoom! Work?

The Zoom! light-activated whitening gel's active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching colored substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. The Zoom! light aids in activating the hydrogen peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. A study has shown that use of the Zoom! lamp increases the effectiveness of the Zoom! gel by 26% or more, giving an average improvement of up to eight shades.

Tooth Sensitivity to Zoom! Whitening

Some patients may experience sensitivity with teeth during Zoom! Treatment. The Zoom! light generates minimal heat which is the usual source of discomfort. On rare occasions, minor tingling sensations are experienced immediately after the procedure, but always dissipate. Prior to treatment, Dr. Begley may be able to supply you with anti-sensitivity toothpaste to help alleviate any discomfort.

Home Whitening

If you choose home-whitening treatment at Avondale Dental, we will take impressions of your teeth that will allow for custom trays to be made for your whitening procedure. The whitening gel is placed in these thin comfortable trays and fitted over your teeth. As you whiten your teeth, carbamide peroxide is broken down and oxygen enters the enamel and dentine. This bleaches out the discoloured areas. The structure of the tooth is not changed, the colour of the tooth is simply lighter. You should wear the bleaching tray at night-time only while you sleep so this doesn't affect your daily activity.

You should wear the bleaching tray for approximately 1 hour each day. We suggest you should wear the bleaching tray for around 2 weeks depending on the severity of your teeth discolouration and how white you want your teeth to become. Results are often seen after 4 or 5 days. Optimum natural whiteness usually occurs when the process is continued for 10 days to two weeks. We will go over what you can expect for your individual situation.
